CTR Opportunity Finder

A page in position 3 should get roughly the clicks your other position-3 pages get. When it gets far fewer, the title or description is usually the reason. This finder learns your typical CTR per position from your own export, not an industry table, and lists what falls short.

HOW IT WORKS

How to use the CTR Opportunity Finder

A Search Console queries or pages export (CSV).

01

Export queries or pages from Search Console (a month or more).

02

Paste the export.

03

Rewrite the snippet of the rows with the most extra clicks, then compare after a few weeks.

WHAT IT CHECKS

What it looks at, and how to read it.

Your typical CTR by position, and rows below it ranked by extra clicks.

Checks

What it checks

  • Median CTR per position in your data
  • Rows below that median
  • Extra clicks if each reached it

Results

How to read the results

  • Extra clicks are an estimate of the gain at your typical CTR, not a promise.
  • Branded queries usually beat the curve; they are not the target.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common mistakes, an example and the limits.

Mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Rewriting snippets on queries where a rich result above you takes the clicks.
  • Judging a change after a few days.

Example

A worked example

A guide at position 4.6 has a 0.9% CTR where the site’s position-5 queries average 3.1%; its title promised "tips" while searchers wanted prices.

Limits

Limitations

  • Your export is read in your browser and never uploaded.
  • Search Console exports show at most 1,000 rows per report and hide rare queries for privacy, so totals can be lower than in the Search Console interface.
  • Typical CTR comes from your own data; rich results, ads and brand strength also change CTR.

FAQ

Questions about the CTR Opportunity Finder

Straight answers about what it does and where its limits are.

Why not use an industry CTR curve?

CTR depends on the market, the search features and your brand. Your own data reflects all of that.

How many rows are needed?

At least five rows at or near a position; positions with less data are skipped.
