UNDER THE HOOD
How competitor analysis works.
How the numbers are produced, so you can judge them for yourself.
Competitors from shared results
Suggestions come from domains that rank for the same keywords in the project’s market. You keep or drop each one, and the set is saved to project context.
Gaps from ranked keywords
A keyword gap compares the keywords each domain is observed ranking for. Before calling a keyword missing for you, your Search Console data is checked for impressions.
Links from referring domains
A backlink gap lists referring domains that link to one or more competitors and not to you, from the provider’s link index.
Estimates stay labelled
Traffic and keyword counts are provider estimates, shown with their dates and never mixed with your measured data.
HOW IT WORKS
From a competitor list to a focused plan.
Four steps from connecting your data to a decision you can stand behind.
Confirm the set
Review suggested competitors and keep the ones that sell to the same customers.
Compare presence
Read traffic, keywords and links side by side in the project market.
Open the gaps
Filter keyword and link gaps, and check Search Console before calling a keyword missing.
Prioritise
Pick the gaps that match your products and capacity, then track them.
WITH YOUR AI AGENT
Ask where a competitor is beating you, with the evidence.
Your agent compares domains, checks your own Search Console data first, and turns gaps into a short, prioritised list.
- Uses the same data as the web app
- Paid tools estimate their cost first
- Saves the report to the project

DATA & LIMITS
Know what the numbers can and cannot tell you.
Where the data comes from, how fresh it is, and the questions it cannot answer on its own.
| Source | What it provides | Freshness & limits |
|---|---|---|
| DataForSEO Labs | Ranked keywords, traffic estimates and shared keywords. | Provider index; coverage varies by market. Paid requests. |
| DataForSEO Backlinks | Referring domains for link gaps. | Provider index; paid requests. |
| Google Search Console | Your own impressions for gap keywords. | Your data; about three days behind. |
Estimates, not analytics
Competitor traffic is estimated from rankings and volumes. It is not their analytics data.
Missing is not absent
A gap means the provider did not observe you ranking. Your Search Console data is checked before a keyword is called missing.
Size is not relevance
A large domain is not automatically a competitor. Keep the sites that sell to the same buyers.
A link gap is a lead, not a target
Review why a site links to a competitor before outreach. Some links cannot or should not be copied.

FAQ
Competitor analysis: common questions.
Straight answers about what it does, what it costs and where its limits are.
How are competitors chosen?
You choose them, and they are stored in the shared project context. Suggested competitors are reviewed rather than accepted automatically.
Is a keyword gap proof that I do not rank?
No. Gaps depend on the provider’s index. Your Search Console data is checked first, and missing data is not treated as proof of absence.
Does competitor analysis cost credits?
Yes. Competitor keyword, traffic and link data uses paid provider requests.
Can my AI agent run competitor research?
Yes. Connected agents can use the research tools and the shared competitor list through MCP.
How many competitors can I compare?
Choose a focused set for the project. Smaller sets give clearer gaps and lower research costs.
Are competitor numbers measured?
No. They are provider estimates, labelled as such. Only your own connected data is measured.
Can I compare by country?
Yes. Comparisons use the project’s market, so a Kenyan store is compared on Kenyan results.
Can my agent run a competitor analysis?
Yes. The competitor analysis skill guides your agent through the set, the gaps and a saved report.
Does it include paid search ads?
No. Competitor analysis covers organic keywords and backlinks, not ad copy or ad spend.
What are the limits of the data?
Gap analysis depends on the provider’s index and the available first-party records. Missing data is not proof that a keyword or link never exists.
How do I get access?
Platform access is reviewed. Request access with your website and the data sources you use, and the team will help you connect them.
