Google SERP Snippet Preview
Write a title and description and see them as a search result before you publish. The preview measures text in pixels, the way Google cuts it, rather than counting characters, so wide letters like W and M are accounted for.

HOW IT WORKS
How to use the Google SERP Snippet Preview
A title (up to 300 characters), a description (up to 1,000) and a page URL.
Paste the page’s title, meta description and URL.
Switch between desktop and mobile to compare where each is cut.
Edit until the important words sit before the cut, then copy them into your CMS.
WHAT IT CHECKS
What it looks at, and how to read it.
Desktop and mobile previews, width meters against Google’s approximate truncation points, and warnings.
What it checks
- Title width against roughly 580px on desktop
- Description width against roughly 920px on desktop and 680px on mobile
- Empty titles and descriptions
- Repeated words and all-capital titles
- How the URL appears as a breadcrumb
How to read the results
- A meter in red means that text is likely to be cut with an ellipsis.
- Warnings list what to change; a clean preview is a good start, not a guarantee.
- If Google shows different text for your page, it rewrote the snippet from the page content.
The concepts behind it, in the SEO glossary: Search engine results page, Click-through rate, Title tag, Meta description.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common mistakes, an example and the limits.
Common mistakes
- Counting characters instead of width: 60 narrow letters fit, 60 wide ones do not.
- Putting the brand first so the useful words get cut.
- Writing a description that repeats the title.
A worked example
A Nairobi phone shop previews "Best Phones Under KSh 20,000 in Kenya (2026) | YourStore". On mobile the brand drops off, so they move the price range to the start.
Limitations
- Pixel widths are measured with Arial at the sizes Google’s results use. Google changes its layout and rewrites many titles and descriptions, so the live result can differ.
- The preview shows how a snippet could look, not how it will rank.
FAQ
Questions about the Google SERP Snippet Preview
Straight answers about what it does and where its limits are.
Why does Google show a different title?
Google rewrites titles it finds too long, repetitive or unhelpful, often using the page’s main heading. A clear, specific title that matches the page is rewritten less often.
Is the character limit 60?
There is no fixed character limit. Google truncates by width, about 580 pixels on desktop, which is roughly 50 to 65 characters depending on the letters.
