HOW IT WORKS
How to use the Meta Description Analyzer
One description, plus the title and a target phrase if you want them compared.
Paste the description from the page’s meta description tag.
Add the title to check the two do not repeat each other.
Rewrite until the key message sits within the mobile meter.
WHAT IT CHECKS
What it looks at, and how to read it.
Desktop and mobile width meters, checks with fixes and a preview.
What it checks
- Width against about 920px on desktop and 680px on mobile
- Very short descriptions
- Descriptions identical to the title
- Words repeated more than twice
- Raw double quotes that break the HTML attribute
- Target phrase presence
How to read the results
- Text beyond the mobile meter is often unseen by most visitors, who search on phones.
- Short descriptions are frequently replaced with a passage from the page.
- A missing target phrase is a prompt, not a rule: write what helps the reader.
The concepts behind it, in the SEO glossary: Meta description.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common mistakes, an example and the limits.
Common mistakes
- Using the same description on every product.
- Stuffing keywords instead of saying what the page offers.
- Copying the first paragraph, which often is not a summary.
A worked example
A real estate site’s listing description, "Apartment for sale", is replaced by Google. Rewritten as "Two-bedroom apartment in Kilimani, 105 m², parking and backup power, KSh 14.5M", it describes the page and fits on mobile.
Limitations
- Pixel widths are measured with Arial at the sizes Google’s results use. Google changes its layout and rewrites many titles and descriptions, so the live result can differ.
- The preview shows how a snippet could look, not how it will rank.
- Google uses your description only when it describes the page better than text it can find itself.
FAQ
Questions about the Meta Description Analyzer
Straight answers about what it does and where its limits are.
How long should a meta description be?
Long enough to describe the page well, usually one or two sentences. Keep the key message in the first 120 or so characters, because mobile results show less.
