Quick definition

A title tag is the HTML <title> element that names a page. Search engines use it as the main source for the clickable headline of a search result, browsers show it in tabs, and it is one of the clearest signals of what a page is about.

Why it matters

The title is often the first thing a searcher reads about a page. It affects whether they click, and it helps search engines understand the topic. A vague or duplicated title makes a good page look like every other result.

How it works

<title>Redmi Note 14 Price in Kenya, Specs & Delivery | Phone Store</title>

Google builds the result’s "title link" mainly from the title element, but it can also use the main heading, anchor text pointing at the page and other on-page text. It rewrites titles that are missing, stuffed with keywords, the same across many pages, or do not match the content.

  • There is no fixed character limit. Google truncates to fit the result’s width (roughly 600 pixels on desktop), so put the distinguishing words first.
  • Each indexable page should have a unique title that describes that page, not the site in general.
  • A brand suffix is common and useful; repeating the same long boilerplate on every page wastes the visible space.

How to check it

  1. Crawl the site and list missing, duplicate and very long titles; group duplicates by template.
  2. Search for your page and compare the shown title link with your title tag; frequent rewrites point to a mismatch.
  3. For pages with many impressions and a low click-through rate, test a clearer title and compare results over the same period length.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • Myth Titles must be under 60 characters.

In fact Truncation depends on pixel width and device, not a character count. Length guidelines are rules of thumb.

  • Myth Google always shows your title tag.

In fact Google generates the title link and may use other text when the title is unhelpful.
