Quick definition
In Google Search Console, an impression is counted when a link to your site appears in a search result a user loaded. For most result types the link does not need to be scrolled into view; for some features, such as carousels, it does.
Why it matters
Impressions measure visibility before any click. Rising impressions with flat clicks can mean you rank for more queries but low down, or that a SERP feature is taking the clicks. Falling impressions are often the earliest sign of an indexing or ranking problem.
How Search Console counts them
- Counted per search: if your site appears twice on one results page, the property view counts one impression; the page view counts one per URL.
- Results on later pages count only if the user opens that page of results.
- Data is grouped by Pacific Time days and retained for 16 months.
- Very rare queries are anonymised: their impressions count in totals but the queries are not listed.
- Clicks and impressions from AI features in Google Search, such as AI Overviews, are included in the Web search type totals rather than shown separately.
How to read impressions
- Look at impressions together with average position and clicks, never alone.
- Compare equal periods (28 days with 28 days, same weekdays) and account for seasonality.
- When impressions jump, check whether new queries appeared at low positions; that also lowers the average position.
