Quick definition
Faceted navigation is the set of filters on a listing page, such as brand, price, size, location or number of bedrooms, that narrow the results. Each combination can create a new URL, so facets can produce more crawlable pages than a site has products or listings.
Why it matters
Facets are essential for shoppers and property or car seekers, and some combinations deserve their own search landing pages ("2 bedroom apartments in Kilimani", "used Toyota Probox in Nairobi"). Most combinations do not. Left uncontrolled, they create duplicate content, empty result pages and crawler traps.
| Facets on a car marketplace | Values | Possible URLs |
|---|---|---|
| Make × model | 60 combinations | 60 |
| + year range | × 25 | 1,500 |
| + price band | × 8 | 12,000 |
| + location | × 47 counties | 564,000 |
| + sort order | × 4 | 2,256,000 |
How to manage facets
- Decide which combinations have real search demand and stock; give those clean, linked, indexable URLs with unique titles.
- Keep the rest out of the crawl: Google’s guidance is to block filter parameters in robots.txt when filtered pages are not needed in search, or to use URL fragments for filters.
- Use one consistent parameter order and return 404 for combinations with no results.
- Point canonical tags of minor variations (sort order, view mode) to the main listing.
How to check it
- Crawl a category with filters enabled and count how many URLs one listing page leads to.
- In logs, measure the share of verified Googlebot requests that hit parameter URLs.
- In Search Console, look for large numbers of "Discovered – currently not indexed" or "Duplicate without user-selected canonical" URLs with parameters.
Common mistakes and misconceptions
Myth Noindex on filter pages fixes crawl waste.
In fact Noindexed pages are still crawled. To reduce crawling, block the parameters or stop generating crawlable links to them.
Myth All filter pages should be blocked.
In fact Combinations with real demand and enough stock can be valuable landing pages. Choose them deliberately.
