Quick definition

A soft 404 is a page that tells visitors it does not exist, or has almost nothing on it, but returns a 200 OK status instead of 404. Search engines detect these, report them and keep them out of the index.

How it happens

  • A missing product page shows "This product is no longer available" with status 200.
  • An empty category or search results page ("0 results") is crawlable and returns 200.
  • Removed URLs are redirected in bulk to the homepage or an unrelated page.
  • A page renders empty because its content API failed, but the server still returned 200.

Google’s systems spot the pattern and label the URL "Soft 404" in Search Console. The page is not indexed, and crawl time is still spent on it.

How to check and fix it

  1. Review the "Soft 404" URLs in the Page indexing report and open a sample.
  2. If the page is genuinely gone, return 404 or 410.
  3. If the page should exist, find why it looked empty: missing content, failed rendering, or very thin templates.
  4. For out-of-stock products that will return, keep the page with useful content (specifications, alternatives) rather than an empty notice.
  5. Stop listing empty filter combinations or search pages as links crawlers can follow.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • Myth A soft 404 is a penalty.

In fact It is a classification. The page is left out of the index; the rest of the site is unaffected.
