HOW IT WORKS
How to use the Query Parameter Analyzer
One full URL with a query string.
Paste a full URL with its query string.
Review each parameter’s type.
Copy the clean URL for canonical tags, sitemaps or internal links.
WHAT IT CHECKS
What it looks at, and how to read it.
Each parameter with its type and advice, duplicates flagged, and the URL without tracking parameters.
What it checks
- Tracking parameters (utm_*, gclid, fbclid, msclkid and others)
- Content-changing parameters (page, sort, filters, search)
- Unknown parameters
- Parameters that appear twice
How to read the results
- Tracking parameters never change the page and should not appear in canonicals or sitemaps.
- Content-changing parameters may need canonical or noindex rules to avoid duplicates.
The concepts behind it, in the SEO glossary: Crawl budget, Canonical tag, Faceted navigation.
GOOD TO KNOW
Common mistakes, an example and the limits.
Common mistakes
- Linking internally with UTM parameters, which resets campaign data in analytics.
- Removing an unknown parameter that actually selects a product variant.
A worked example
"/phones?sort=price&utm_source=facebook&fbclid=…&page=2" becomes "/phones?sort=price&page=2" for the canonical, keeping sorting and pagination.
Limitations
- Parameters are classified by name. A site can use a common name for something else, so unknown and functional parameters are never removed.
FAQ
Questions about the Query Parameter Analyzer
Straight answers about what it does and where its limits are.
Should I block parameters in robots.txt?
Sometimes, for crawl-heavy filters, but blocking also stops Google from seeing canonical tags on those URLs. Decide per parameter.
