Quick definition

Internal linking is how pages on the same site link to each other: navigation, breadcrumbs, related items and links inside content. Internal links help visitors move through a site, help crawlers discover pages, and show search engines which pages a site considers important.

Why it matters

Search engines discover most pages by following links. A page with no internal links (an orphan page) may be found only through a sitemap, and is treated as less important. Pages many clicks from the homepage are crawled less often. And the anchor text of internal links tells search engines what the target page is about.

How it works

  • Links must be real <a href="…"> elements with a resolvable URL; Google does not follow links that exist only as JavaScript click handlers.
  • Pages that receive more internal links, especially from strong pages, tend to be treated as more important within the site.
  • Descriptive anchor text ("2 bedroom apartments in Kilimani") helps; generic text ("click here") does not.
  • Navigation and breadcrumbs give consistent structure; contextual links in the body connect related topics.

Example

A phone store’s new model pages are linked only from page 6 of the brand category, sorted by date. Adding them to a "New arrivals" block on the brand page, linking each model from its predecessor ("Replaced by the Redmi Note 15"), and listing them in the breadcrumb trail brings them within two clicks of the homepage.

How to check it

  1. Crawl the site and sort pages by click depth and number of incoming internal links.
  2. Compare crawled pages with sitemap pages to find orphans.
  3. Check that important pages are linked from relevant content, not only from navigation menus.
  4. Find internal links that point at redirects or 404s and update them.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • Myth More internal links are always better.

In fact Dozens of links in every footer or sidebar dilute the meaning of each. Link where it helps the reader.

  • Myth Nofollow on internal links sculpts PageRank.

In fact Nofollow on internal links does not redirect value to other links; it mainly stops discovery through that link.
