Quick definition

Average position in Google Search Console is the average of your topmost position in results across all the impressions in the selected period. It is an impression-weighted average, so it moves when the mix of queries changes, not only when rankings change.

How it is calculated

For each impression, Search Console records the position of your highest result on that page. Average position is the mean of those values. Every link inside one feature, such as an AI Overview or a carousel, shares that feature’s position.

A new low-ranking query lowers the average even though no existing ranking dropped.

Why it matters

It is a quick summary of visibility, but easy to misread. A falling average position can mean you started appearing for many new long-tail queries at position 30, which is good news. Always look at it per query and per page, alongside impressions and clicks.

How to use it well

  1. Analyse position by query or by page, not as one site-wide number.
  2. Group queries into position bands (1–3, 4–10, 11–20, 21+) and track how many sit in each.
  3. For specific keywords in specific locations, use rank tracking, which checks the same query on a schedule.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • Myth Average position is your ranking.

In fact It is an average over many searches, queries, devices and locations. A single search can show a very different position.
