Quick definition
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the web pages they draw on. They grew out of Google’s Search Generative Experience experiment and launched widely in 2024; AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience built on similar technology.
Why it matters
An AI Overview can answer a question before the searcher reaches the organic results, which can reduce clicks for some informational queries. Being one of the linked sources is a new form of visibility, and the queries that trigger AI Overviews are worth knowing for any content plan.
How it works
Google says there are no special requirements for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. The same SEO fundamentals apply: crawlable, indexable pages with helpful content.
- Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in Search Console‘s Web search totals, not reported separately.
- All links in an AI Overview share the AI Overview’s position in Search Console.
- Snippet controls (
nosnippet,data-nosnippet,max-snippet) limit use in AI Overviews, but also limit ordinary snippets. - The
Google-Extendedrobots.txt token controls use of content for Gemini models; Google says it does not affect AI Overviews in Search.
How to check it
- Track which of your target queries show an AI Overview, by country and device, over time.
- Record whether your pages are among the linked sources.
- Watch Search Console for queries where impressions hold but clicks fall; AI Overviews are one possible cause among several.
Common mistakes and misconceptions
Myth There is a special markup or file that gets you into AI Overviews.
In fact Google says no special optimisation or markup is required beyond normal search eligibility.
Myth Blocking Google-Extended removes your site from AI Overviews.
In fact Google-Extended governs Gemini model use. AI Overviews are part of Search and follow Googlebot and snippet rules.
