Quick definition
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is an emerging, loosely defined name for work aimed at being mentioned and cited in AI-generated answers. The term comes from a 2023 research paper; similar labels include AEO and LLMO. Search engines do not define it, and much of it overlaps with established SEO.
Where the term comes from
The paper "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization" (Aggarwal and colleagues, 2023) tested how changes to source text, such as adding statistics, quotations and citations, affected how often generative engines used that source. Since then the term has been used broadly, and sometimes for unproven tactics.
| Overlaps with SEO | Specific to AI answers |
|---|---|
| Crawlable, indexable pages | Allowing the AI crawlers and fetchers you want |
| Clear, well-structured answers | Passages that stand alone when quoted |
| Authority, reviews and mentions elsewhere | Being named in sources AI systems draw on |
| Accurate structured data | Tracking mentions and citations, not just rankings |
How to treat the term
Use it as a description of a goal, not a separate discipline with its own rules. Be cautious with claims of guaranteed AI placement or secret ranking factors for language models: the systems change quickly, answers vary by user, and providers publish little about how sources are chosen.
