Hreflang Tag Generator

Every language version of a page must list all the others and itself, with valid codes and absolute URLs, or Google ignores the set. Doing that by hand across many pages is error-prone. This generator builds the full, reciprocal annotations from one table.

HOW IT WORKS

How to use the Hreflang Tag Generator

A CSV: a header row of hreflang codes, then one row per page with the URL of each version.

01

Put one column per language code (en-KE, sw-KE, x-default) in the header.

02

Add one row per page with each version’s URL; leave a cell empty if a version does not exist.

03

Copy the tags into each page’s head, or download the sitemap.

WHAT IT CHECKS

What it looks at, and how to read it.

Validated link tags for each page group, and a sitemap with hreflang to download.

Checks

What it checks

  • Language and region codes, including x-default
  • Absolute URLs
  • One URL per language in a group
  • Rows with a single version

Results

How to read the results

  • Use either head tags or the sitemap for a page, not both, so they cannot disagree.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common mistakes, an example and the limits.

Mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Writing en_KE with an underscore, or uk for English in the United Kingdom (uk is Ukrainian).

Example

A worked example

A shop with English and Swahili pages gets one block of three tags per page, including x-default.

Limits

Limitations

  • Builds the annotations from your table; it does not check the URLs are live or point back. Use the Hreflang Validator on the live pages.
