Quick definition
AI search visibility describes how often, and how, a brand or website appears in answers from AI assistants and AI search features such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google’s AI Overviews. It is not one metric: mentions, source citations and referral visits are different measurements.
Three different measurements
| Signal | What it is | How it is measured | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mention | The answer names your brand | Running tracked prompts and reading answers | Sampled; answers vary run to run and by user |
| Citation | The answer links your page as a source | Same, recording the linked URLs | Sampled; a citation is not a visit |
| Referral visit | A person clicks through to your site | Analytics referrers (chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com…) | Undercounted when apps strip referrers; first-party but partial |
A brand can be mentioned often and cited rarely, or cited often while getting few visits because the answer already satisfied the user. Reporting them as one "AI visibility score" hides those differences.
Why it matters
People increasingly ask assistants for recommendations: which phone to buy, which agency to hire, which neighbourhood to rent in. Whether a business is named, and whether its pages are used as evidence, influences demand that may never appear as a search query or a click.
How to measure it honestly
- Choose prompts that real customers would ask, per market and language, and run them on a schedule across the assistants that matter.
- Record mentions and cited URLs separately, with the date, model and location of each run.
- Segment AI referrers in GA4 or server logs to count actual visits.
- Treat tracked results as a sample. Compare trends over time, not single answers.
Common mistakes and misconceptions
Myth AI visibility tools show what every user sees.
In fact Answers depend on the model, location, conversation history and chance. Tracking is a repeatable sample.
Myth Being cited means you received traffic.
In fact Citations and visits are separate. Check referral data before claiming traffic.
