SITEMAPS & CRAWLING

Sitemap Index Analyzer

Large sites split their URLs across many sitemaps listed in one index. A single dead or malformed child file can hide thousands of URLs from search engines without anyone noticing. This analyzer opens the index, then each sitemap in it.

HOW IT WORKS

How to use the Sitemap Index Analyzer

The URL of a sitemap index file.

01

Enter the sitemap index URL (often /sitemap_index.xml or /wp-sitemap.xml).

02

Look for sitemaps that fail or report problems.

03

Fix or remove those entries, then resubmit the index in Search Console.

WHAT IT CHECKS

What it looks at, and how to read it.

A table of the child sitemaps with status, type, URL count, newest lastmod and problems, plus checks on the index itself.

Checks

What it checks

  • Child sitemaps that cannot be read
  • Indexes listing other indexes (not allowed)
  • Child sitemaps on another host
  • Bad URLs, duplicates and lastmod problems in each child

Results

How to read the results

  • Empty child sitemaps are harmless but often mean a content type is listed that should not be.
  • A newest lastmod far in the past on an active section suggests the generator is not updating dates.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common mistakes, an example and the limits.

Mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Submitting each child sitemap separately and forgetting to remove dead ones.
  • Pointing the index at http:// child URLs on an https site.

Example

A worked example

A WordPress index lists a users sitemap with author archives the site has set to noindex; removing it from the sitemap keeps it consistent.

Limits

Limitations

  • Reads the first 10 sitemaps the index lists.
  • Counts and dates come from each file as served now; a CDN may serve an older copy than your server has.
