SITEMAPS & CRAWLING

Website Click-Depth Mapper

Pages a few clicks from the homepage get crawled more often and usually receive more internal link value. Important pages buried four or five clicks deep, or linked from a single listing, are easy for search engines to neglect. This map shows the depth of every crawled page.

HOW IT WORKS

How to use the Website Click-Depth Mapper

One public URL to start from.

01

Enter the homepage.

02

Look at how many pages sit at each depth, then at the warnings.

03

Link important deep pages from the menu, category pages or related content.

WHAT IT CHECKS

What it looks at, and how to read it.

Pages per click depth, warnings for deep and weakly linked pages, and a table of every page with its depth and internal link count.

Checks

What it checks

  • Fewest clicks from the start page to each page
  • Pages four or more clicks deep
  • Pages linked from only one crawled page

Results

How to read the results

  • Depth counts links, not folders: /a/b/c/ can be one click from the homepage.
  • Pagination makes later pages deep; that is normal for old listings, not for products you want to sell.

GOOD TO KNOW

Common mistakes, an example and the limits.

Mistakes

Common mistakes

  • Linking every page from the homepage. Group pages under strong category pages instead.

Example

A worked example

A shop’s best-selling phone sits four clicks deep behind two pages of pagination; adding it to the phones category’s featured block brings it to two.

Limits

Limitations

  • Crawls at most 50 pages, breadth first from the start URL, so on a bigger site it covers the pages closest to it.
  • Follows links in the HTML the server sends. Links a page adds with JavaScript, and pages linked only from forms or scripts, are not found.
  • Stays on the start URL’s host and obeys its robots.txt for our crawler; blocked pages are counted, not fetched.
  • Depth is the fewest clicks along links in the crawled pages. A page found only beyond the 50-page limit is not measured.
